At my work place people often bring in homemade treats for the office to nibble on. One day a guy (Chris Walsh) brought in cinder chocolate things, which are very much like crunchies.
He distributed the recipe which even for idiots like me seemed doable. I made a couple of batches for Becky’s birthday party and they were warmly received. So like my colleague I thought I would spread the good word and show how easy it is.
Ingredients
This is enough to make a plate full of goodies.
- 5 tablespoons of caster sugar
- 2 tablespoons of golden syrup
- 1 level teaspoon of bicardonate of soda
- 200g of the chocolate of your choice.
Utensils
- A saucepan
- Big pyrex bowl to melt your chocolate in over your saucepan (so big enough to sit on top of it
- Baking tray
- Stuff to mix and stir with
Making the crunchie bit
- Put the sugar and golden syrup into the saucepan
- Bring to the boil over a medium heat, keep stirring and it will mix together and melt.
- Keep stirring for about 3 minutes.
- Take off the heat and quickly add the bicarbonate of soda and watch THE MAGIC OF PHYSICS
- Pour it onto your baking tray and leave it for 30 minutes
A word of warning
The resulting mix is very sticky and get’s hard very quick in your pan. It’s really important that after you pour as much of it out as you can that you get to washing it quickly, or it will become very difficult. I used very hot water and washing up liquid coupled with some elbow grease.
Melting your chocolate
This may seem obvious to most, but just in case you havent done it before, here’s how. This doesnt take long so do this after the crunchie bit has been left to set for about 25 minutes.
Before melting the chocolate you should break up the cinder. I found it easiest to run a spoon under it, which breaks it up as you spoon through. After that lightly tap the big piece with a spoon to break them up further
- Using the saucepan that you just washed put in some water, you don’t need a lot and heat it until it’s boiling
- Break up your chocolate into small pieces the pyrex dish
- Take the saucepan off the heat and place the dish on top of the saucepan so the steam from the water heats the dish.
- You don’t need to stir it very often, just keep it moving occasionally.
Once the chocolate has melted using a spoon drop a cinder bit into the chocolate and turn it around a bit so it gets fully covered. Put it onto something it wont stick on and will fit in your fridge (I used a plate with tinfoil covering it). Repeat until all your bits are covered in chocolate.
Leave in the fridge for a few hours for the chocolate to set.

Try it yourself!
